Yesterday, Matt and I traveled west to the Blue Mountains and visited Echo Point and Three Sisters; they are part of the National Park. The weather wasn't too promising as we were riding with steady rain the entire way to Katoomba. But once we arrived the clouds dissipated and the sun came out and we decided the hike was on. We hiked for about 10k starting with a rather steep and long descent down the great staircase--it was a little risky because the steps are all either slippery stone or slippery metal. Once we were on the trail we navigated through rooted trails skirting a rather steep fall to the south littered with tall trees without foliage until their very tops, which offers a very unique looking canopy. The rocks were incredible as were the myriad of views and angles we saw of the valley--incredible.
We decided to hike far past the national park which was great, but halfway to the "broken castle" it started to rain again with some epic thunder. Needless to say being 2 hours from reaching the castle, we began our run back to a trolley which ran vertically up the valley's stone ridge. The run was invigorating and wet; we were soaked as we rested to snack on the rest of our protein bars and green apples under a rock which protected an unfortunate family of mosquitoes caught in large spider webs.
After making it back we ascended on the old skid to a bus which took us back to where we parked Matt's car.
Having hiked off the trail to get an up close look and touch a waterfall and wading pond, I experienced an awakening effect of nature.
This is a stitched image from the trolley station (about 5k from the great staircase):
